The city of Columbia is governed by a seven-member Council and a city manager -- in addition to a dedicated and hard-working staff. Three of the Council members, including the Mayor, serve at-large (hold city-wide seats). Four council members represent districts.

Richland School District One is governed by a seven-member Board of School Commissioners, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. The state's fifth-largest school district, Richland One serves 25,000 students and operates six high schools.

Richland County is governed by an 11-member Council and a county administrator. All of the Council members represent single-member districts. Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month. With 385,000 residents, Richland County is the state's second-most populous county. The county is 772 square miles in area.
